3 Day Occupational First Aid Course

Course Details:

The three day Occupational First Aid course is aimed at those persons within an organisation with responsibility for first response and first aid treatment in the workplace. The course meets all the requirements of the National Ambulance Training School (NATS) curriculum, and the First Aid Regulations 2007. The course content will assist those responsible for first aid to develop a preventative approach to accidents and incidents within the workplace.

Objective:

On completion of the Occupational First Aid course participants will have:

  • An understanding of the principles of first response
  • The skills to provide necessary first aid within the workplace
  • The necessary skills to deal with emergencies
  • Essential life saving skills
Certification:

All participants who pass the course successfully receive a certificate from a accredited National Ambulance Training School (NATS) trainer and will be registered as First Aiders.

Day 1
  • Responsibilities of a first aider, assessment and initial reaction
  • Diagnosis and principles of treatment
  • The Nervous System
  • Head Injuries
  • Shock - Fainting
  • Unconsciousness
  • Patient Approach
  • Examination of Casualty
  • Recovery Position
  • Asphyxia and its causes
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation practical
  • Holger Neilson method of resuscitation
  • Examination of the eye
  • Treatment of foreign bodies and chemical splashes
  • Poisoning
Day 2
  • Burns and Scalds
  • Corrosive injuries
  • Chemical splashes
  • Blood and the circulation
  • Wounds and bleeding
  • Control of bleeding
  • Dressings and bandages - application, including improvisation
  • Fractures - causes, types, signs and symptoms
  • Sprains, strains and dislocation
  • Crush injuries
  • General rules for treatment
  • Handling and transport including improvisation
Day 3
  • Dressing and bandaging fractures
  • Epilepsy, Asthma and Diabetes - definition, causes, treatment
  • Emergency First Aid Kits - contents
  • Revision - practical; any requested subject revised; questions; resuscitation
  • Examination - a practical incident to treat
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
  • Question paper
  • Bandages, slings and transport are introduced as appropriate and practised throughout the course.

1 Day Occupational First Aid Refresher Course

Participants who have completed this course will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate up to date skills
  2. Understand new developments in First Aid
  3. Hold a valid 3 year Occupational First Aid Certificate

Who Should Attend?

Certified First Aiders who need to re-certify before the expiry of their certificate as per the health and safety regulations.

Course content:
  • Assessment, Accident Scene Management
  • Circulation, Wounds and Bleeding
  • Asphyxia
  • CPR
  • Unconsciousness
  • Fractures, Sprains, Strains and Dislocations
  • Burns, Scalds, Chemicals, Poisons and Electric Shock
  • Medical Emergencies, Crush and Spinal Injuries
Certification:

All participants who pass the course successfully receive a certificate from a accredited National Ambulance Training School (NATS) trainer and will be re-certified as First Aiders.

Duration: 1 Day

Participation: Maximum of 12

Manual Handling Course

Course details:

To comply with current Health and Safety legislation, staff engaged in manual handling must be given training in safe lifting techniques. This training will show your staff how to lift correctly and therefore avoid back injuries. claims. Back injuries caused by incorrect lifting techniques are one of the most frequent causes of workers compensation claims.

Objective:

On completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the consequences of incorrect lifting
  • Understand the mechanics of the spine and muscular system
  • Understand the principles of safe lifting
Course content:
  1. Introduction
  2. Legislation
  3. Anatomy & Injuries
  4. Biomechanics
  5. Principles of Safe Handling
  6. Lifting Techniques
  7. Conclusions

This course combines lecture methods with "hands-on" practical work with different types of materials.

Who Should Attend:

All staff engaged in lifting loads during their working day

Assessment / Certification:

Each participant will be assessed on their practical lifting techniques. A completed manual handling assessment form for each participant will be supplied to their employer.

Duration: 4 hours

CPR And Heartsaver AED - Automated External Defibrillation Course

The Instructor:

Our instructors are registered with the Irish Heart Foundation and the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council as well as being experienced emergency services personnel. We provide you with the reassurance of fully insured training courses, delivered to the highest standards.

Course Content:
  • Adult & Child CPR
  • Using a pocket mask
  • Adult & Child defibrillation
  • Choking
Certification:

Successful candidates will be issued with an IHF / AHA course completion card which is valid for 2 years. OHS strongly recommend 1 hour of refresher training every 12 weeks.

Each student receives the following:
  • Heartsaver AED student manual
  • Heartsaver AED student cd-rom
  • CPR pocket facemask

Duration: 4 Hours

Participation: Maximum of 6
